Grade 2- Life Science - Life Cycles - Resources
Life Cycle Curriculum

Massachusetts Science Technology Learning Standards:
* Recognize that animals (including humans) are living things that grow, reproduce, and need food, air, and water.
* Recognize that animals have life cycles, and that life cycles vary for different living things.
* Describe ways in which many animals closely resemble their parents in observed appearance.
* Recognize changes in appearance that animals go through as the seasons change.
Identify the ways in which an organism's habitat provides for its basic needs (animals require food, water, air and shelter).

Books and Videos in Union #38 School Libraries:

Tracks in the Sand Leedy. Loreen
A brief picture book that describes the reproduction of sea turtles mating at sea, the female's sojourn to shore, egg laying, and return to the ocean. Eggs develop, hatchlings scramble across the sand to reach the sea, and the cycle begins again years later as a female crawls to shore.

Tiny Seed Carle, Eric
Dazzling colorful collage illustrations and a simple but dramatic text tell the fascinating story of the life cycle of a flower in terms of the adventures of a tiny seed.

Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf Ehlert, Lois
Lois Ehlert uses watercolor collage and pieces of actual seeds, fabric, wire, and roots in this innovative and rich introduction to the life of a tree. A special glossary explains how roots absorb nutrients, what photosynthesis is, how sap circulates, and other facts about trees

A Log’s Life Pfeffer, Wendy
After an oak tree falls in the forest, it has another life as home to a variety of creatures. As it decays over time, it provides food and shelter to porcupines, ants, mushrooms, salamanders, and many others, until it eventually turns into a mound of rich black earth.

Forest Explorer Bishop, Nic
Explore the exciting world of the forest, where more than 125 different bugs, worms, and small critters play out the drama of life in miniature

Waiting for Wings Ehlert, Lois
Every spring, butterflies emerge and dazzle the world with their vibrant beauty. But where do butterflies come from? How are they born? What do they eat--and how?

With a simple, rhyming text and glorious color-drenched collage, Lois Ehlert provides clear answers to these and other questions as she follows the life cycle of four common butterflies, from their beginnings as tiny hidden eggs and hungry caterpillars to their transformation into full-grown butterflies

Sunflower House Bunting, Eve
Sunflower seeds sown in a circle--and watered, weeded, and watched--eventually grow into a beautiful sunflower house with lots of room inside for three friends and their imaginations. When summer’s over and the sunflowers fall, the friends save seeds to plant next spring
